When Does My Motorcycle Need an MOT?

In the UK, motorcycles require an MOT test:

  • Once they are 3 years old
  • Every year thereafter

You can have your MOT carried out:

  • Up to 1 month (minus a day) before expiry
  • Without losing your original renewal date

What Is Checked During a Motorcycle MOT?

A motorcycle MOT focuses on safety and environmental standards. The test includes checks on:

  • Brakes
    Condition, operation, and performance.
  • Tyres & Wheels
    Tread depth (minimum 1mm across ¾ of the tyre), condition and security.
  • Lights & Indicators
    Headlights, brake lights, indicators, number plate light.
  • Steering & Suspension
    Free movement, wear, leaks, and general condition.
  • Frame & Structure
    Corrosion, damage, or excessive wear.
  • Exhaust & Emissions
    Security, noise levels, and emissions compliance.
  • Horn & Mirrors
    Correct operation and visibility.

The MOT does not cover the engine condition or internal mechanical components, but if we spot something concerning, we’ll always let you know.
