Meet 13-Year-Old Motocross Rider, Deryn Jones

At just 13 years old, Deryn Jones from Eccleshall, Stafford is already carving out her place in the world of motocross. Confident, determined, and grounded, Deryn talks to us about how she got started, what drives her passion, and her big dreams for the future.

How did you first get into motocross — who got you started?
“I’ve seen pictures of my dad doing moto x when he was younger,” Deryn says. “Then I saw him riding his pit bike one day and thought, that’s something I’d like to do. My dad agreed to let me give it a try — and that’s how it all started.”

Do you remember your first time on a dirt bike? What was that like?
She laughs, recalling the memory. “I was really nervous. It was hard to get used to the clutch, and I ended up flipping the bike into my dad — there’s actually a video of it! Lmao.”

What kind of bike do you ride now, and what do you love about it?
“I ride a Kawasaki KXL 140cc. Before that, I had a Bucci 125cc. I love my Kawasaki because the bigger wheels make it easier to control.”

How often do you train or practice?
“I try to hit the track every weekend,” she says. “Usually, I manage to go two or three times a month.”

What’s been your favourite race or track so far?
“My favourite track to ride is j4 M54 or 2.0 MX track because they both tend to be easy riding in all-weather types.”

What’s the best feeling about being out on the track?
“I like being on the track because it takes my mind off everything and makes me feel calm.”

What’s been your proudest moment since you started riding?
“My first jump,” she says with a grin. “I felt proud that I managed to get airtime.”

Have you faced any challenges as a young female rider?
“I feel like I have always been accepted well by others in the moto group, but older outsiders have made comments about me being a young girl in moto x. These comments have made me want to work harder to prove them wrong.”

What advice would you give to other girls who want to try motocross?
“Be yourself, have fun, anything a boy can do a girl can do also. Being a girl makes you more noticed for your achievements.”

Who supports or inspires you the most?
“My dad supports me on the track, his friends cheer me on and motivate me, my mum celebrates my achievements. The mx group are like my family.”

What’s your big goal for the future — where do you see yourself going in motocross?
“My ultimate dream is to join Supercross and follow in the footsteps of riders like Blaine Blackwell.”

At an age when most kids are still figuring out their hobbies, Deryn is already chasing her passion at full throttle. With her fearless attitude and strong family support, this young rider from Stafford is one to watch — both on and off the track.
